Driver indicted for injuring woman in June accident

PALESTINE — The East Texas driver and owner of a truck/tractor which allegedly ran a red light and struck a vehicle operated by a 19-year-old Palestine woman have been indicted by an Anderson County grand jury.

Kenneth Lee Woodworth, 46, and Bennie Joe Adkinson, 75, both of White Oak, were indicted late last month on the first-degree felony charge of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to records.

Woodworth was operating a 1990 GMC truck/tractor owned by Adkinson when he allegedly ran a red light at the intersection of North Loop 256 and Sterne Avenue shortly after noon on June 11, striking a 2000 Buick Park Avenue driven by 19-year-old Martha Michelle Gaines of Palestine.

Gaines received multiple injuries, including a head injury and broken ribs and pelvis, and was in a coma for more than two months. She had two operations on her brain to relieve pressure and faces a long recovery.

Gaines had just signed a scholarship to play soccer at Hill College in Hillsboro at the time of the accident.
