Waterspout hits Galveston as tornado

GALVESTON, Texas (AP) — A tornado left at least three people hurt in Galveston.

The damage was being surveyed Monday.

National Weather Service meteorologist Charles Roeseler says a water spout that formed Sunday night became a tornado when it reached land.

Galveston Police Chief Charles Wiley says two officers were treated for minor cuts after the windows on their patrol cars were blown out.

The Galveston County Daily News reports witnesses saw a piece of the roof from a souvenir shop, Dolphin World, blow off and hit a man. The victim was taken away by ambulance. His condition was not immediately available.

CenterPoint Energy spokesman Keith Gray says electricity was knocked out to about 4,000 customers, but most power was restored by early Monday.

The tornado hit nearly one year after Hurricane Ike swamped parts of Galveston.
