One dead, one charged in shooting Saturday

A fight turned deadly Saturday afternoon in west Palestine as a 21-year-old man was fatally shot.

According to Palestine Police Sgt. Jeff Powell, officers were dispatched to the 2000 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. at 12:43 p.m. Saturday in reference to a gunshot victim.

Officers arrived to find Jarod Burton, 21, of Palestine, with a 9mm semi-automatic pistol in his possession and another 21-year-old, Tyrone Price, shot once.

Price was transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center for treatment but was later pronounced dead by Justice of the Peace Gary Thomas at the hospital.

“The initial investigation revealed that Burton and another male, identified as Price, were involved in a physical altercation inside a residence prior to Price being shot,” Powell said.

Burton was taken into custody and transported to the Anderson County Jail where he was to be booked on a murder charge, Powell said, and added that Price’s body will be sent to the Southeast Texas Forensic Center in Tyler for an autopsy.

Police were not releasing any other information at this time, Powell said.
