Judge Bentley undergoes quadruple bypass surgery

PALESTINE — Local state district judge Bascom W. Bentley III was listed in “serious” condition Friday morning at a Tyler hospital after suffering an apparent heart attack Thursday afternoon.

The 57-year-old Bentley was working at his farm near Cayuga late Thursday afternoon when he started experiencing chest pains and other signs commonly associated with having a heart attack, according to a family friend requesting anonymity.

Bentley was transported by Emergency Medical Services and arrived at Palestine Regional Medical Center around 5 p.m. Thursday. He was later lifeflighted to Trinity Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, according to the source.

Bentley reportedly underwent quadruple bypass surgery shortly after midnight Friday at the Tyler hospital, according to the same source.

As of 8 a.m. Friday, Bentley was listed in “serious” condition at the Tyler hospital, according to John Moore, hospital spokesperson.

A family friend told the Herald-Press that Bentley was off a ventilator Friday morning and showing positive signs.

Bentley, a Palestine native, has presided over the 369th state district court since 1989 and previously served in multiple other roles, including Anderson County court-at-law judge.
