Palestine woman killed after being struck by vehicle

A Palestine woman died from injuries she sustained at the scene when she was struck by a vehicle Monday afternoon on U.S. 287/Texas 19 South, about a half mile from the Palestine city limits.

According to Texas Department of Public Safety, the pedestrian — Cheri Lynn Hope, 46, of Palestine — was struck at about 12:37 p.m. Monday while attempting to retrieve or check on her dog who had recently been hit by a car in the 4400 block of U.S. 287/Texas 19 South.

“Apparently, her dog had got hit by a vehicle. She was out there crouched over either in an attempt to pick it up or protect it when she was struck by a vehicle traveling southbound,” DPS Trooper Jack Hallock said. “According to witnesses at the scene, she was partially in the travel lane.”

The pedestrian was struck by a 2001 Ford Expedition driven by Geraldine Demar, 61, of Palestine.

“We had several 911 calls of a lady in the roadway with a dog just prior to the crash and law enforcement was responding,” Hallock said. “I was actually on my way to that call when the crash occurred.”

The accident is still under investigation, Hallock said. Hope's next of kin had been notified as of Monday afternoon.

Responding to the scene were DPS Anderson County Sheriff's Office, Palestine Fire Department, Palestine Police Department, Palestine Regional Medical Center Emergency Medical Services and Elkhart Volunteer Fire Department.
