ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
• Second Grade — Buttons, buttons everywhere! The second graders in Mrs. Link and Mrs. Anderson’s classes tested their creativity with buttons last week. Each student made a unique picture to display in the hallway.
• Third Grade — Mrs. Hinshaw’s, Mrs. McNeill’s and Mrs. Poff’s classes have enjoyed a wonderful beginning to third grade! We started the year off learning all about the amazing polar bears and their many adaptations that help them to survive in the world of snow and ice at the North Pole. The children enjoyed reading a detailed narrative that documented the first years of two polar bear cubs as they learned from their mother how to fend for themselves in the Artic north.
Students were even able to participate in an experiment, "Whale Wear" that helped the children understand how blubber keeps the polar bears warm even in icy, cold water. Students also had fun learning about facts and opinions, and enjoyed making a "Pop Up" fact book about polar bears.
In science, third graders have been busy planning and implementing simple classroom investigations. We have worked on using scientific inquiry methods such as; formulating reasonable hypotheses, collecting information by observing, and being able to come up with a valid conclusion. The classes especially enjoyed the "Cabbage Chemistry" experiment.
They had fun discovering that cabbage juice indicates the presence of an acid or base.
Students were surprised to see that cabbage juice will turn a mixture of baking soda and water green, while it turned the lemon juice red!
MIDDLE SCHOOL
• STAR of the Week — Lindsey LeMon, 8th grader at Cayuga Middle School, was selected as the "STAR of the Week.”
