School Happenings for 9-30-07

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

• Fourth Grade — Mrs. Hamil’s fourth graders have started the year off in science studying the Scientific Method. They have done a couple of investigations on “mystery liquids” that either make something pop or burn and leave it unmarked. In language, students have jumped into writing about some of their adventures. Wow! These students are awesome!

• Fifth Grade — Fifth graders have been busy reviewing math and learning fractions in Mrs. Lane’s class. For Mrs. Henigan, they wrote an adventure story to go along with the NASCAR theme in their building. They’ve also been learning about different forces such as friction, gravity and buoyancy. They have learned about pushes and pulls of magnets through hands on experiments with toy cars, boats and airplanes. Mrs. Dickens has kept students busy during Constitution Week. Students performed two plays, learned three songs and watched a movie all about the Constitution. They also read the book “Shhh! We’re Writing the Constitution.” Students have also studied the Bill of Rights and about the three branches of government.

• Upcoming Events — Friday, end of first sixth week; Oct. 8, no school; Oct. 10, report cards.



MIDDLE SCHOOL

• Student of Day — The following students were selected as "Student of the Day" for the week of Sept. 24: Anyssa Barbosa, Brandon Miller, Tracy Richardson, Brooke Riggleman and Lane Henry.

The following students were selected as "Student of the Day" for the week of Sept. 17: Abigail Broyles, John Jean, Hunter Piwonka, Jessica Blair and Macie Croft.

• BoxTops — Cayuga Middle School is collecting BoxTops for Education. Please send box tops to Mrs. Griffey. Grades are competing. The winning class will receive a pizza party at the end of 1st semester.

• STAR of the Week (Sept. 24) — La’Darius Walker, an eighth grader at CMS, was selected as the STAR of the Week. He is the son of Tamika Miles and grandson of Gayle Garrett, all of Tennessee Colony.

Walker plays football, basketball and track for the Wildcats. He also participates in Model UN and Band. He is a member of Sheridan Terrace Baptist Church youth group. He likes CMS because he is able to get help with his work due to smaller classes, and he also likes the extracurricular activities he can participate in.

• STAR of the Week (Sept. 17) — Lindsey, LeMon, an eighth grader at CMS, was selected as the "STAR of the Week.” She is the daughter of Maurice and Lisa LeMon of Tennessee Colony.

LeMon is a cheerleader, a student council member, volleyball player, a member of Model UN, and a member of the Tennessee Colony Church Youth Group. She likes teachers of CMS because they take a special interest in each of the students.

• Freedom Week — CMS students celebrated Constitution Day and Freedom Week with various activities sponsored by the CMS Student Council. Monday there was a Spirit Poster contest. Students who participated were Taylor Foster, Macie Croft, Tracette Majette, Hunter Piwonka and Braden McInnis. Tuesday, students and faculty wore red, white and blue. Wednesday, students enjoyed Patriotic Floats served by CMS staff. Thursday, a historical scavenger hunt was held. The winning group was made up of Lindsey LeMon, Kalli Jo Radford, Samantha Turrentine and Braden McInnis. Friday, class officers and sponsors participated in a relay race and 8th graders were victorious. Historical Trivia was given everyday and the winners were Diana Riley, Jacob Henry, Tracey Richards, Taylor Wagner and Kaitlyn Massey.

• Texas Maps — Seventh-grade Texas History students made salt and flour maps this week and painted them showing the four regions of Texas. Students have been studying Texas natural regions, characteristics and geography. It was sticky fun!

• Ag News — Mrs. Cox and CMS would like to thank eighth graders, Braden McInnis and Justin Sudduth for attending and participating in the Plant ID contest in Athens recently. CMS is proud of both of you!

Also, congratulations to Braden McInnis for winning his steer class at the East Texas State Fair this past Sunday. Breck Alexander placed second in his steer class too. Way to go guys!

• CMS Ladycat Volleyball — The Ladycats will play at Cross Roads at 5 p.m. Monday.

The Middle School Ladycats played host Sept. 24 to the Oakwood Lady Panthers and the Cross Roads Lady Bobcats. The seventh "A" and eighth "A" teams played Oakwood. The seventh grade won 25-16, 19-25, and 15-12. Shawnta Knox, Courtney Hearrell, and Taylor Wagner were outstanding servers. Shawnta had 5 aces. Taylor Wagner was also the leading hitter with five kills. The eighth grade lost 17-25, 24-26. Shelby Henry and Samantha Turrentine were the top servers for the Ladycats. Lou Russell and Jessica Blair hit well.

The seventh "B" and 8th "B" teams played Cross Roads.

The seventh grade won 25-11, 25-15. Shelby Tucker, Briana Wilson, and Meghan Coates were super servers. The eighth grade lost 15-25, 23-25. Kaitlyn Massey and Abigail Broyles were the leading servers. Kalli Jo Radford and Diana Riley hustled and led the Ladycats with great passing, saves, and kills.

The seventh grade "A" team traveled to Trinidad Sept. 17 and defeated the Lady Trojans 25-19, 25-19. Meagan Poland, Shawnta Knox, and Taylor Wagner were the leading servers. The seventh and eighth grade "B" teams traveled to Cross Roads and defeated the Lady Bobcats.

The seventh grade won in two games 25-14, 15-9. Outstanding servers were Briana Wilson, Meghan Coates, and Macie Wilson. The 8th grade won 25-12, 23-8. Leading servers were Samantha Turrentine, Kaitlyn Massey, Kalli Jo Radford, and Yovana Cerrillo.

The Ladycats played host to the Cross Roads Lady Bobcats on Sept. 10. The Ladycats made a clean sweep with all four teams defeating the Lady Bobcats. The seventh grade "A" team won 25-8, 25-20. Taylor Wagner, Tiffany Gray, and Reann Richards were outstanding servers. The seventh grade "B" team won 25-21, 25-7. Shelby Tucker and Macie Wilson served well.

The 8th grade "A" team won 25-12, 25-20. Shelby Henry and Ashley January were awesome servers. The eighth grade "B" team won 25-10, 25-12. Kalli Jo Radford and Kaitlyn Massey were outstanding servers. Thank you Mrs. McInnis for helping us keep score!

The Ladycat "A" teams traveled to Oakwood Sept. 3. The seventh-grade team won 10-25, 25-23, 15-13. Tiffany Gray served well, and Taylor Wagner had some great hits. The eighth-grade team lost 15-25, 25-22, 13-15. Lou Russell and Diana Riley were super servers, while Shelby Henry did an excellent job of setting. The "B" teams traveled to Cross Roads. The 7th grade team lost 25-11, 17-25, 14-25. Shelby Tucker played well for the seventh grade. The eighth-grade team won 25-16, 25-11. Brittney Tucker, Kaitlyn Massey, and Kalli Jo Radford served well for the Ladycats.

• Cross Country — Eighth grader Hunter Jenkins did a great job at the Palestine Cross Country Meet. He placed 39th out of 64 runners.

• Upcoming Events — Monday, volleyball (CMS. vs. Crossroads) there at 5 p.m.; Tuesday, one-act play tryouts; Friday, end of first six weeks; Saturday, cross country meet in Fairfield.
