Many people deserve to be recognized for what they do
Senior Moments column

PALESTINE —
When the saints go marching in, they should be recognized. During my working years, I thought about running a feature column called The View From the Pew, but I never quite got around to it. Now I'd like to make amends in Senior Moments by pointing out those who do so much for congregations and community. These are not the people who always serve on the boards and commissions, but the quiet unassuming folks who do their share — and then some. I hope you will send me short items (a paragraph or two) about them and I'll include them in this column..
In a previous column I mentioned Jim Addington helping get a bunch of Woodhouse exes together, but he thinks Kaye Williams, the hostess, should also get credit for those events. Me too. She has a perfect home for inviting a crowd, room to spread out and a fabulous lake view. And you get to meet people who are "thinking out of the box." I talked to one woman, an attorney who conducts her practice via computer. She said she has clients she has never met. I could take that idea and run with it, conducting a copy editing business by e-mail. I need to get out of my box and think about it.
Jim sent around news from a Woodhouse ex before I started writing this column. But I think good news never gets stale. He provided a copy of a Certificate of of Appreciation that was given to Billie Holloway, the 2009 Senior Citizen of the Year, who was honored Sept. 24 at Harvey Convention Center in Tyler. Billie's comment on the award: "It is always such an honor to be recognized for one's contributions. However, I'm really puzzled as to who 'let the cat out of the bag' that I MIGHT be a senior citizen!"
Jane Cheatham sends word that she is writing about the Great Depression era so her grandchildren can learn about their family in those challenging times. "My family was a loving family with great faith and these two things saw us through," Jane says. It sounds like her story will be one her descendants can treasure and learn from.
