Elkhart ISD Happenings for Feb. 1, 2009

The Palestine Herald

ELKHART ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

l School Board Student of the Month — Joli Ballew is the student of the month for Elkhart Elementary.  She is an honor roll student in Mrs. Dyer’s fifth grade class where her favorite subject is reading.  She is also involved in the GT Music class and the DARE program.  Joli is the daughter of Jennifer and Marc Ballew of Elkhart and the granddaughter of Janet and Mike Shaver of Elkhart; and Ann and Creel Ballew of LaGrange.  She has an older sister, Jessi, 14 and a younger sister, Janna, 7.

Joli aspires to be a veterinarian when she finishes school and with her attitude and determination, she will definitely be a success.

Joli is a great example to all of the students and is generous and caring to everyone that she meets.

l Headstart — Elkhart Elementary has openings in the Headstart program for 4-year-olds. The program is a federal program that services children who are 4 years old on or before Sept. 1 of the current year.

Head Start is a program of the United States Department of Health and Human Services that provides comprehensive education, health, nutrition and parent involvement services to low-income children and their families.

In order to complete enrollment the parent needs their Income Tax return from the previous year (2008), social security cards, current immunization record, proof of address and current insurance if any.  Please contact the school if you need further information.

l Mrs. Trim’s Kindergarten — Mrs. Trim’s kindergarten class went to China! One of their favorite Superkid friends from their reading program, Lily Ping, is from China.

Lily sent each of the kids a letter written in Chinese and English and asked them to visit her, so they decided it would be fun to take a pretend trip to China. The kids worked hard to learn about her country as they prepared for the big day. Finally it was time to go! They used chopsticks to taste some of her favorite foods and enjoyed some of the activities she likes. Getting to use a Chinese yo-yo, a Chinese jump rope, and ribbon dancing was a lot of fun. Soon it was time to return to their school. Their Superkid friend, Lily, sure makes learning to read FUN!
