Elkhart ISD School Happenings for 3-11-07

The Palestine Herald

HIGH SCHOOL

Senior Student of the Month — Senior Student of the Month is Dustin Wilson. He is the son of Dan and Dora Wilson. In his free time he likes to play sports, guitar, and bass. He also likes spending time with his friends and family. He has special interests in playing and listening to music as well as sports. Dustin has been busy at work in the community helping Quill and Scroll deliver presents to the nursing home and sending essentials to our troops in Iraq each month. At school he is the Vice President of the Spanish Club and National Honor Society. Dustin also serves as Treasurer of the Interact Club and holds an office in the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He also finds time to play baseball and basketball. Dustin received Second Team All District honors in baseball and Most Valuable Player in Tennis. He has also been voted as Student of the Month each year. Dustin’s future plans are to go to Stephen F. Austin University and receive a good education in order to have a successful career. Dustin moved to Elkhart from Indiana during his eighth grade school year. He says that he has slowly adapted to our southern accents. Dustin’s favorite things about Elkhart High School are the teachers and students.

Teacher comments include:

Coach Smith: “Dustin has been a pleasure to have coached and taught for the last two years. He is a young man mature beyond his years, and he is extremely intelligent. He will be missed when he graduates!"

Coach Nettles: “Tremendous person, student and athlete. Since his hair cut he is also well groomed.”

Junior Student of the Month — Katherine Tyer is the Junior Student of the Month. She is the daughter of Randy Tyer. In her free time she likes to watch ESPN and talk to friends on My Space. Katherine is busy in her community helping out at her church, Calvary Baptist. She serves by helping in the nursery. In school, Katherine is involved with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and National Honor Society. She also plays volleyball, basketball, and softball. Katherine received Honorable Mention All District honors and was a Regional qualifier in the 100 meter hurdles. Her favorite thing about Elkhart High School is the students. Her future plans are to get a scholarship in basketball or softball which will help her earn a degree and become an athletic medical trainer/physical therapist.

Teacher comments include:

Mrs. Bickerstaff: “This young lady is a natural born leader. She is head strong and stands on what she believes in. She is also a blessing to know.”

Mrs. Coppedge: “Katherine is a hard worker. She always strives for perfection in her work and is conscientious about getting everything completed and turned in on time.

G/T Nominations — Elkhart High School is now accepting nominations for the district’s Gifted and Talented program. Students can be nominated by teachers, peers, parents, or community members.

If you know of a child who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkable high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment you may nominate them for participation in this program.

For an informational packet please contact Debbie Coates at 903-764-5161.

Upcoming Events — Monday, high school cheerleading tryouts; Thursday, deadline for ordering AP Exams to be taken in May; Friday, Progress Reports.
