SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea launched seven ballistic missiles Saturday into waters off its east coast in a show of military firepower that defied U.N. resolutions and drew global expressions of condemnation and concern. The salvo, confirmed by the South Korean government, also appeared to be a slap at the United States as Washington moves to enforce U.N. as well as its own sanctions against the isolated regime for its May 25 nuclear test....more>>

DALLAS (AP) — A man has been sentenced to death for a second time in the 1989 slaying of an 81-year-old Dallas woman. Mark Robertson, who was sentenced Thursday, had won a second sentencing hearing after a federal appellate court ruled that his original Dallas County jury had been given confusing instructions on how to consider his punishment. The instructions involved the jury’s consideration of mitigating factors, including a defendant’s abusive childhood....more>>

BELMAR, N.J. (AP) — Roll up to an intersection in many places and the sign you see might not only tell you to stop, yield or turn in a certain direction, it might also feature unwanted ads for a taco joint, surf shop, miracle diet, a political candidate, or urge tourists to go home. From the boardwalks of the New Jersey shore to the desert metropolises of Arizona and West Texas and the drizzle of Oregon, street signs, utility poles and even private property are often covered with advertising stickers....more>>

SHINER, Texas (AP) — By all accounts, Shiner beer shouldn’t have made it this long. The Spoetzl Brewery ferments its brew in a one-stoplight town that’s not on the way to anywhere, and much larger regional brewers long ago succumbed to consolidation and the muscle of national brewers. For years, Spoetzl limped along with cast-off parts from other breweries and lingered on the brink of shutting down. But today, at 100 years old, Shiner beers are more popular than ever, the oldest and largest craft beers in a state where people cling fiercely to their beer and to all things Texan....more>>

NEW YORK (AP) — Fireworks lit the night sky above New York with a kaleidoscope of colors shooting 1,000 feet into the air on an Independence Day that began with the Statue of Liberty’s crown opening to the public for the first time since Sept. 11, 2001. It was the nation’s biggest fireworks display, with more than 22 tons of pyrotechnics exploding Saturday over a mile-and-a-half of the Hudson River, a new vantage point for New York’s festivities. Millions of spectators watched from both sides of the river....more>>
