Cayuga wins over Grapeland, 34-28

By WAYNE STEWART
The Palestine Herald

BETHEL — Cayuga capped off a District 20-A championship Friday with a 34-28 win over the Grapeland Sandies.

A dominant first half, which saw the Wildcats build a 28-0 lead against Grapeland, was powered by the legs of Malcome Kennedy and Traylon Shead.

Kennedy ran for 111 yards on 20 carries with a pair of touchdowns for Cayuga while Shead ran for 163 on 18 carries and three scores. Kenney also threw for 110 yards on 8-of-22 passing with an interception.

Cayuga’s defense dominated the first half, holding the Sandies to just 34 offensive yards while forcing them to commit four turnovers, two fumbles and two interceptions, which Cayuga converted into 21 first-half points.

The Wildcats’ Billy Duncan came up big on defense for Cayuga grabbing a pair of interceptions. He also caught three passes for 39 yards.

The second half was a different story. Grapeland scored on its opening posession with the big play coming on a 77-yard touchdown pass from Cameron Boyd to Rashawd Shepherd.

Cayuga answered right back with a 27-yard scoring run by Shead, putting Cayuga up by a comfortable 34-6.

The Sandies were able to score 22 more points against the Wildcats, which by that time was playing many of its substitutes. Still, the Sandies were able to put up 22 points in the fourth quarter, but Cayuga put its offensive starters back in the game late, and after a 38-yard run by Shead to the Grapeland 11-yard line, the game was all but over.

On a bright spot for Grapeland, Donte Brown ran for 92 yards on 10 carries for the Sandies and Boyd passed for 152 yards.

“It’s good to have a game like that (before playoffs,)” Cayuga head coach Tommy Allison said after the game.

Now Cayuga will have to prepare to play Beckville at 7:30 p.m. Friday in Bullard.

Allison said he and the team are looking forward to the playoffs.

“This is the part of the season we have been trying to get to all year,” Allison said. “Now we can see if we can get set for another playoff run.”
