Cayuga continues proud tradition

Published Sun., Feb. 22, 2009

I read the Scott Tyler story about the Cayuga girls’ basketball team with interest and pride, but was stopped short by the quote from the first year Cayuga head coach, “it is the first time Cayuga has won the district championship and to go undefeated….”

Cayuga girls have won district championships many times over the years. I know of one team in the 40s and at least one more in the 60s that won district championships. During the 1974-1975 season, Cayuga girls went undefeated in district and advanced to the state tournament. That was the beginning of a four year run by Steve Haney teams at Cayuga, where Cayuga girls went 56-0 in district. That particular streak was finally broken by LaPoynor. Cayuga girls also advanced to the state tournament under Coach Joyce Williams in the 1980s. Coaches George Cox and Clark Pearson both took Cayuga girls’ teams to regional tournaments.

Cayuga girls are continuing a long, proud tradition, not starting a new one.
