Be proud of park, neighbors

On Saturday (March 7) volunteers, employees of the city, several local companies, the mayor, high school students and dozens of other people installed a new playground for the children of Palestine in Reagan Park. The actual installation was just the finishing touch on a project that came together after two years of hard work.

The Junior Service League of Palestine had been working towards this day, and when it finally arrived, the end result was nothing short of overwhelming! The Junior Service League did an exceptional job of planning and fundraising for this project. I have had the pleasure of working with the ladies of the Junior Service League from the planning stages through to Saturday’s installation, and I can say without a doubt, they are the most organized and driven group of people I have ever worked with. This team was out to build a playground that would be the envy of every city in east Texas, and they did it. And they’re not done yet; additional phases are in the planning stages now.

Reagan Park is such a beautiful park, and a true centerpiece for the city. I love the old school building; beautiful, but rather sinister looking. I can only imagine the terror as a kindergartener walking up to that building for the first day of school. Several of the volunteers told me they had attended school there, and that the building is over 100 years old.

That Saturday was an incredible event, and more volunteers turned-out that anyone had expected. They started working early, and stayed late. Throughout the day everyone worked to dig holes, assemble the playground equipment, mix concrete; and other than a quick break for a wonderful lunch, they never quit. What a wonderful group of people to work with. They were all working for the improvement of the park, and the improvement of the community. I’ll let these people remain anonymous, because I don’t want to take the chance of leaving any one of these hard working ladies and gentlemen off any list.

Palestine, you have a playground to be proud of; but more than that, you have neighbors to be proud of. They all deserve a pat on the back, and a heartfelt “THANKS.”
