Crockett Lions Club Rodeo slated
Staff Reports

CROCKETT — Final plans are being made for the 47th edition of the Crockett Lions Club PRCA Rodeo to be held Thursday through Saturday at the Porth Ag Arena in Crockett.
To kick off the rodeo, nationally famous trick rider Leann Pollock, a Canadian, will join announcer Mike Mathis to open Crockett’s first ever “Tough Enough to Wear Pink” promotion to recognize and support Breast Cancer Awareness. Breast cancer patients and survivors will be admitted to the rodeo free and be recognized during the opening ceremonies on Thursday. All gate receipts for the Thursday performance will be donated to local Breast Cancer causes.
The rodeo will feature the nationally famous bucking stock of the Andrews Rodeo Company of Addilou. Sammy Andrews, owner and son James have been coming to Crockett for 13 years. Together they represent the third and fourth generations of family in the stock contracting business. Andrews Rodeo received the ultimate honor for stock contractors when they were named the top stock contractor in America in 2002. Since then, he has added several sons of his world famous Hall of Fame bucking bull, Bodacious, to his string of bucking stock. Good stock attracts good riders, so the fans at the Crockett rodeo will be seeing the best of both at the 2008 rodeo.
Rodeo announcer Mike Mathis of Lufkin will be calling the action at the Porth Ag Arena for the 14th consecutive year. Mathis travels all over the United States and is recognized as one of the very best in his profession.
Rudy Burns, from Smithdale, Miss., will return as the rodeo comedy clown and barrel man. Burns has been in professional rodeo for more than 30 years and has been in Crockett many times. He is always popular with the fans. The rodeo clown this year is sponsored by Baskins where he will be making some personal appearances if you want to visit with him.
In addition to the cowboys and cowgirls, the rodeo also will feature the always popular rodeo queens contest. Five beautiful and talented young Houston County cowgirls will be trying to succeed Liz Dowdy, 2007 Rodeo Queen. Appearances will also be made by the Angelina Mounted Patrol on Friday evening. There also will be a children’s calf scramble each night for children under 10 years, with prizes being provided by McDonalds.
On Saturday evening there will be a drawing for a four-wheeler, made possible by Tractor Supply or $4,000 worth of groceries, made possible by Brookshire Bros. The lucky winner can choose which he wants. There will also be a drawing for a $300 Dodge Trophy Buckle by Wayne Williams Motor Co.
The rodeo, which begins at 7:30 p.m. each evening, funds the many civic and charitable activities of the Crockett Lions Club.
Presale tickets will be available at most county banks, at Baskins, at Crockett Farm and Fuel, at S&B Chemicals and at other locations. Presale tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children 6-12. Tickets at the gate are $2 higher.
To show their appreciation, the Crockett Lions Club will admit all veterans, law enforcement officers, firemen and other emergency workers free on Thursday only.
In addition, current military personnel in uniform will be admitted free each evening.
