With today’s high price of gasoline, who wouldn’t want to save a little money by ordering their groceries over the phone?
Harold Pettit, director of the Basics of Life Storehouse, hopes people start thinking this way and take advantage of the monthly food packages offered through Angel Food Ministries and in doing so save a lot of money.
“Now, since gas is so high, people need to get on the phone and call during office hours and place an order,” Pettit said Wednesday afternoon.
“This way you can come in one time only to get your groceries. On the last Saturday of the month.”
The office located at Lacy and Magnolia streets in Palestine is open from 9 a.m. until noon Monday through Friday with extended hours beginning Thursday.
Pettit believe many people have not taken advantage of the affordable food packages because they are unable to take off from work in the mornings to come place their orders. Payment must be made when orders are placed.
“We encourage people in the community to call their orders in (903-731-9270) and they can use their Master Card, Visa or debit card to pay,” Pettit said. “It can really save you money.
“Folks can be saving 30 to 40 percent by shopping with us,” Pettit said. “Thirty to 40 percent on your grocery bill is a lot.”
Last month, Angel Food Ministries received over 200 orders, a number that Pettit believes is too low.
“With the people in Palestine and surrounding areas we can get 1,500 orders per month,” he said. “We need to build orders back up.”
Angel Food Ministries benefits anyone, regardless of income.
The monthly food package costs $31 and includes enough food to feed a family of four for a week. It can feed a single, older person for up to a month.
Each month the basic food package includes plenty of frozen food, meat and vegetables in addition to eggs, a dessert item and more.
“We need to emphasize the savings,” Pettit said. “If you’re working and can’t get off during our office hours. Call and order by phone. You’ll save a lot of money.”
In addition to the basic food package, Angel Food Ministries offers three meat specials.
Extended hours start Thursday and run through May 19. The office will be open from 9 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.
Pick-up day is Saturday, May 31 at First Baptist Church, 5700 N. Loop 256 (next door to the YMCA). Pick-up time is from 7 to 10 a.m.
