Woman killed, child injured in wreck

By PAUL STONE
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE A Saturday night one-vehicle accident between Palestine and Elkhart left one area woman dead and a 2-year-old child seriously injured, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Sandra Green Little, 66, of Frankston was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident which occurred at 7:28 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 287, approximately 2.7 miles north of Elkhart, according to a DPS spokesperson.

The DPS said Tristian Hyatt, 2, of Frankston was seriously injured in the one-vehicle accident.

Hyatt, who was reportedly not related to the deceased woman, initially was transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center with burns and other injuries, according to the DPS.

Hyatt subsequently was transferred to Children’s Medical Center in Dallas, PRMC spokesperson Lynn Scribner told the Herald-Press Monday afternoon.

Rachel Hedstrom, media relations manager at Children’s Medical Center, however, told the Herald-Press Monday that Hyatt was not listed there as a patient.

Also, a telephone message left early Monday afternoon for DPS Trooper Lynn Hubert, who is investigating the accident, had not been returned as of late Monday night.

Little was operating a 2001 Chevrolet Tahoe when she apparently left the roadway due to unknown reasons, according to the DPS.

“Unit One (Little’s Chevrolet Tahoe) was southbound on (U.S.) 287,” the DPS spokesperson told the Herald-Press. “The driver ran off the west side of the roadway; crossing both lanes of traffic; striking a tree; and then catching on fire.”

Anderson County Precinct One Justice of the Peace Gary Thomas pronounced Little dead at the scene at 8 p.m. Saturday, according to the DPS.

An autopsy was ordered to be performed on Little’s body at Southeast Texas Forensic Science Center in Tyler.
