Woman indicted for possession

By PAUL STONE
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE A 58-year-old Tyler woman who was allegedly in possession of a small amount of methamphetamine this past fall has been indicted by an Anderson County grand jury.

Peggy Ann Helm, 58, of Tyler was indicted recently on the charge of possession of a controlled substance less than 1 gram stemming from her arrest inside the Frankston city limits on Sept. 25, 2007, according to records released by the Anderson County district clerk’s office.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on that date, Helm was a passenger in an Oldsmobile Bravada SUV operated by a 28-year-old Tyler man which was pulled over by Anderson County sheriff’s deputies in Frankston after they smelled marijuana coming from the vehicle, authorities have said.

Anderson County sheriff’s Cpl. Ryan Tolliver and deputy Ronnie Howell were assisting with traffic control on Texas 155 in Pert after a power line had fallen across the highway, crossing traffic to be diverted onto CR 435, Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said at the time.

“As the vehicle drove off, they could smell marijuana emitting from it,” the sheriff stated.

After the officers completed their traffic control duties, they ultimately stopped the SUV on Texas 155 in Frankston, just a few blocks north of the intersection of U.S. 175, according to Taylor.

As officers searched the vehicle, Helm, who was standing outside, pulled a “smaller zipper coin purse” from her crotch area and dropped it, the sheriff said.

The purse was retrieved and discovered to contain “a crystal-like substance which field tested positive for methamphetamine,” according to Taylor.

Including packaging, the methamphetamine weighed 0.6 gram, according to the sheriff.

Authorities have also said Helm had a total of $1,066 in her possession.
