County man arrested on drug charges

By PAUL STONE
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE A 43-year-old Palestine man was arrested early Wednesday on a drug possession charge after authorities say they responded to a call of a person “passed out” on the side of the road.

As of late Thursday afternoon, Stoney Glenn Gatewood, 43, of Palestine remained in the Anderson County Jail on the charge of possession of a controlled substance less than 1 gram in lieu of a $7,500 bond set by Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Todd.

Gatewood was arrested around 7 a.m. Wednesday in the 1100 block of CR 367, also known as the Old Neches Highway, according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

“We got a call from an individual who advised us there was a male on the side of the road who appeared to be passed out,” Taylor said.

Sheriff’s deputy Patti Reid responded to the area and “observed this individual laying on the ground partially unclothed,” the sheriff stated.

After a period of time, Reid was “finally” able to get the individual — later identified as Gatewood — to respond.

“He did have a smell of alcohol on him,” Taylor said. “She patted him down for officer safety and find a small, clear plastic baggy.”

The substance inside the baggy field tested positive for methamphetamine, said the sheriff, describing it as a “very small amount.”
