UT Tyler nurses to host health fair

PALESTINE —
University of Texas at Tyler’s Student Nurses Association and Palestine Regional Medical Center are working together on a large community-wide Health, Fitness and Safety Fair this fall.
“We started out literally just planning to hold a garage sale in a parking lot and doing free blood pressure checks, but it has completely grown bigger than our imaginations,” student nurse Cieja Cryer said.
The fair is planned from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 11 at Evangelistic Temple.
“We have so many people who are planning to participate — the Crisis Center, YMCA, the American Cancer Society,” student nurse Tammy Corson said. “Stewart Blood Center will do a blood drive — we have doctor’s offices, organizations and health businesses offering their support.
“There are a lot of great health resources out there that people don’t realize are available,” Corson added. “We hope this will help the community to discover what’s out there.”
According to Corson, Palestine EMS and the Palestine Fire Department also are planning to participate, among others.
A meeting was planned this morning from 10 a.m. to noon at the UT Tyler Palestine campus for groups and businesses wanting to participate so ideas could be tossed around. More planning meetings will be held in the future.
“Anyone who wants to help with the fair is asked to give us a call, or those wanting to make a donation for door prizes or other things,” Corson said.
The UT Tyler Student Nurses Association will still hold the garage sale in the church parking lot in conjunction with the fair.
“We will let the public know when we are ready to collect garage sale items,” Cryer said. “Right now we are trying to secure a place to store the items.”
