WJHS open house slated
Westwood Junior High School will be opening its doors for Open House from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Aug. 19. On this evening, students will be able to pick up their class schedules before or after the general session which will begin at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Some of the items to be discussed at the session are:
● Class schedules
● Schedule change requests
● New courses
● New learning opportunities for the students
● Parent Support Group and Booster Club information
In addition, students and parents will be given the opportunity to meet the teachers and staff as well as explore the various classrooms and the junior high campus.
Students unable to attend the event that evening may up their schedules Aug. 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. or on Aug. 21 from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 5 p.m. Students will need to contact the counselor, Mrs. Anderson, before Aug. 21 for any schedule changes. No schedule change request will be accepted after the 21st.
Open registration for junior high students new to the district will be held Monday through Friday from 9 to 11 a.m. and 1 to 3:30 p.m.

AARP driving course offered
A two day AARP Driver Safety Program will be held from 1-5 p.m. Sept. 8-9 at First Christian Church located at 113 E. Crawford St.
The refresher course is designed for drivers 50 years of age and older, but is open to anyone.
The cost of the course is $10 per person. Attendees may qualify for reductions in automobile insurance premiums for three years upon successful completion of the course.

Gospel concert set Aug. 23
ATHENS — The Texas Gospel Music Hall will celebrate its second anniversary with the Mark Trammell Trio as the featured group on Aug. 23.

TVCC special board meeting set
ATHENS - Trinity Valley Community College Board of Trustees will meet in a special called meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the board room of the Orval Pirtle Administration Building on the Athens TVCC campus.
Purpose of the meeting is to conduct a workshop regarding the 2008/09 budget.
The only item scheduled for vote is to establish a proposed tax rate to support the budget. No other business will be conducted.

PJSL Back to School Fair set
The Palestine Junior Service League will hold their annual Back to School Fair from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16 at the Palestine High School/Middle School Cafetorium.

Cayuga ISD board to meet
The Cayuga Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold a called meeting at 7 p.m. Monday in the Cayuga High School library.
The board will consider for possible approval the district employee handbook and transfer students; and will conduct a budget workshop.

Republicans to meet Monday
The Anderson County Republicans will meet Monday at the Republican Headquarters located at 515 N. Church St. Light refreshments and fellowship will begin at 6:30 p.m. with the meeting following at 7 p.m.
The special guest speaker will be Diane Caron, the Senatorial District Committee person.
Anyone interested in the philosophy of the Republican Party is welcome to attend.

Tuesday program to focus on salt
Americans eat a lot of salt that we don’t see or shake. Did you know that salt is added to almost every prepared food on the shelf at the grocery store? Join Holly Black with Texas AgriLife Extension Agency at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Palestine Resource Center for Independent Living, 421 Avenue A., as she presents alternative cooking methods using herbs and spices, instead of salt. PISD board to meet Monday
The Palestine Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold their regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the PISD Board Room, located on the high school campus.
The board will consider for possible approval: external audit firm; proposed budget and tax rate; setting the mileage rate at state levels; the purchase of 500 student desks; GCA Contract; a trustee to serve on the Anderson County Appraisal District Board; student code of conduct; designation of acute shortage of teaching areas; and an architect contract.
During the” superintendent’s report” portion of the meeting, the board will: hear a report from the TEA presented by Dr. James Wall; hear a report on TAKS scores; discuss board meeting procedures; discuss transfer students; discuss the purchase of two economy-size cars; hear a report on the superintendent’s mentor, Carthage ISD Superintendent (and former EISD Superintendent) Dr. Glenn Hambrick; review dates of the TASA First Time Superintendent’s Academy; discuss a breakfast program at PISD; review dates of the 48th annual TASA/TASB Convention; discuss the moving of regular board meetings to the third Monday of the month, beginning Sept. 15; and discuss upcoming board workshops and meetings — Aug. 18 and 25.
In closed session, trustees will discuss personnel matters and will conduct an exit interview with former superintendent Jerry Mayo.

WISD regular meeting set
The Westwood Independent School District Board of Trustees will hold their regular meeting at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the WISD Administration Board Room, located at 4524 W. Oak St. in Palestine.
The board will consider for possible approval: the consent agenda; the second reading of Policy Update 83; selection of a WISD trustee to serve as a delegate and an alternate delegate to the TASB Convention Legislative Council; and campus fund-raising requests.
Trustees also will hear reports on or discuss: Federal Title Programs; preliminary science and fine arts building architectural plans; summer improvements to district facilities; rollback election information; and the scheduling of a special meeting to complete end of year fiscal tasks.
In closed session, the board: will consider hiring, accepting resignations and leave requests of professional and non-professional personnel; and will discuss the board self-evaluation and operating procedures.
