Free diabetes series offered

Staff Reports
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE Diabetes is a fact of life for millions. According to figures from the American Diabetes Association, more than 17 million Americans are living with diabetes, and 16 million of them have type 2 (formerly known as adult onset diabetes).

Diabetes can cause health problems throughout the body, but those who have type 2 can do a lot about improving their own health by keeping a careful watch on their nutrition.

People with diabetes can live long, healthy lives if they take good care of themselves — particularly by controlling blood glucose levels through good nutrition.

Palestine Regional Medical Center and Texas Cooperative Extension are sponsoring “Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes,” a series of free diabetes classes.

“Do Well, Be Well” with Diabetes is a five-week program that provides health and nutrition education for individuals and family members of individuals that have Type 2 Diabetes.

Classes will be presented by members of the medical staff and healthcare professionals of Palestine Regional Medical Center and Palestine Regional Rehabilitation Hospital.

Key speakers will include Dr. Michael Gorby, Dr. Jim Wilkerson, Dr. Robert Falconer, Mike Smith R.D., Kelly Gill R.D., Andrea Sims R.N., Allison English RPH and Holly Black CEA-FCS.

Classes will be held Oct. 11, 18, 25, and Nov. 1 and 8 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Palestine Regional Rehabilitation Hospital.

To register for “Do Well, Be Well with Diabetes” classes, call Holly Black, County Extension Agent — Family & Consumer Sciences, at 903-723-3735. If special accommodations for classes are needed, please identify when you register prior to Thursday.
