Klein wins cutest dog contest

Our Town column

By CHERIL VERNON
The Palestine Herald

PALESTINE Klein, a 4-year-old German Shepherd owned by Barry Swinney of Neches, is the winner of the 2009 Palestine Herald-Press’ Cutest Pet contest.

Photos of the pets entered in the contest were printed in the Sept. 13 edition of the newspaper. Voting for the cutest pet was held from Sept. 13 through Sept. 22.

As the winner, Swinney received a $50 gift certificate from PetSense to spend on Klein.

Klein is well known for riding around town with his owner — and for wearing his signature bandana around his neck and goggles over his eyes.

It all started when Swinney found a pair of goggles in a magazine, purchased them and tried putting them on Klein.

“He kind of pawed at them the first time,” Swinney said in a past interview, but he got used to it.

Now the goggles are as much a part of Klein as his playful personality.

“He’s just a big ol’ ham,” Swinney said, “but people love him wherever he goes.”
