City council expected to vote on smoking ban

By PAUL STONE

PALESTINE The Palestine City Council is expected to consider a smoking ordinance which would prohibit smoking in most public places during a regular meeting Monday.

The meeting is set to begin at 5:30 p.m. in City Council Chambers at 504 N. Queen St.

A work session, starting at 4 p.m., will precede the main meeting.

Back in August, representatives of the Palestine Young Professionals Network addressed the city council, asking that the body consider a stricter smoking ordinance patterned largely after ones already in place in Tyler and College Station.

A dozen persons spoke during a Sept. 21 public hearing, with nine of those favoring a stricter ordinance. Most of the speakers cited health and similar concerns.

If an ordinance is approved, it would likely provide exemptions for some entities such as private clubs.

A first-time violator of the ordinance would be subject to a $300 fine, while repeat offenders could face a fine of up to $500.

Also on Monday, the council is expected to:

• CONSIDER an ordinance establishing an Identity Theft Prevention Program.

• CONSIDER confirmation of Wendy Ellis as economic development director.

• CONSIDER agreement between Capgemini Energy LP and the Palestine Economic Development Corp.

• CONSIDER estimated proposals for removal, demolition and disposal of 712 W. Oak St.

• CONSIDER approval of new fire engine.

• CONSIDER an ordinance adopting extended hours for sale of mixed beverages within City of Palestine.

• CONSIDER resolution expressing intent to finance expenditures to be incurred in connection with acquisition of Palestine Mall.

• CONSIDER an ordinance approving budget amendments for fiscal year 2009-10.
