Palestine police arrested five people Tuesday as a result of an investigation of an alleged assault which occurred Dec. 7.
According to Sgt. Jeff Powell, Det. Patsy Smith executed a warrant search Tuesday at a location in the 1000 block of W. Carolina St., in connection with the investigation of a reported aggravated assault with a deadly weapon which occurred Dec. 7 at the same location.
On Dec. 7, a Hispanic male was reportedly assaulted with a shovel at that location and taken to Palestine Regional Medical Center for treatment.
Smith was assisted by members of the Palestine Police Department, Dogwood Trails Narcotics Task Force and Anderson County Sheriff’s Department, which provided an entry team for the search warrant.
While at the location, officers recovered evidence relating to the assault case, Powell said, as well as drug evidence, which prompted a second search warrant to search for additional drugs and related evidence.
As a result, officers seized more than 27 grams of cocaine and prescription medication, including Hydrocodone and Promethazine with Codeine, Powell said.
Authorities arrested Jamie Clewis and charged him with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, engaging in organized criminal activity and also manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance greater than 4 grams but less than 200 grams.
Also arrested were Justin Tucker, charged with manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance greater than 4 grams but less than 200 grams; and Myron Smith, Jessica Hatton and Carlos Davidson, all charged with engaging in organized criminal activity.
As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Clewis remained in jail on bonds totalling $205,000, as did Smith with $75,000 bond and Hatton with $50,000 bond, all set by Justice of the Peace Carl Davis. Bond had yet to be set for Tucker and Davidson at that time.
