Dogwood Jamboree auditions set for June 22

PALESTINE — Youths age 18 and younger who are interested in singing classic country music or play an instrument are invited to auction for the Dogwood Jamboree’s “All American Country” show on Saturday, June 22.

Auditions will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, June 15 at the Palestine Civic Center. Three young artists will be chosen to compete on the Dogwood Jamboree show.

“We receive calls quite often from young people who are interested in being on the show. The judges have great difficulty in choosing only three young people for the show each time,” Dogwood Jamboree Producer Dan Manuel said. “We are so proud of these young people who love country music and those who are so talented. We believe in young people and it is great to see these young people off the streets and  making an effort to improve their lives by participating in events similar to the Jamboree.”

Seventy-five percent of the decision determining the winner of the show will be based on voting by the audience and the remaining 25 percent of the decision will be made by three judges that night.

The winner of the June show will advance to the finals in December, joining winners of other shows for the Jamboree Artist of the Year competition.

Taylor Heard from Mount Pleasant won the title “Jamboree Artist of the Year” in 2012. Previous winners include Kim Hendricks in 2011 and Madisson Fuller (former Miss Teen Texas) in 2010.

“Some of the young performers who have appeared on previous shows have advanced their careers with major recording labels,” Manuel said.

Any young person who plays an instrument or sings classic country music is invited to audition for the upcoming performance by calling 903-723-6291 for an application and appointment time. There is no fee to participate.

The June Dogwood Jamboree show will feature “The Texans” of Branson, Mo. as well as Jake Penrod, known for his performance “A Night with Hank Williams.

Regular artists performing include Joe Hancock, Hal Roper, Sissy Perry and  Manuel. Sandy “Flo” Singleterry will be on hand with her usual comedic antics for the performance on stage that evening.

“The show will be punctuated with comedy and will truly be a showcase of talent,” Manuel said. “We have a lot of visitors and tour groups coming. This will be an unforgettable performance” Manuel said.
