Scouts to conduct annual Scouting for Food drive

PALESTINE — The East Texas Area Council of Boy Scouts of America is preparing for its annual Scouting for Food drive the week of Nov. 10-17. The food drive will span the 17 East Texas counties that make up the East Texas Area Council.

Scouting for Food, conducted each fall, not only addresses a community need but also teaches Scouts about the importance of compassion toward others and about service learning.

“Just imagine the anguish of a parent who cannot provide food for his or her family, especially during the holidays,” said Sam Anderson, VP of Marketing for the East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America. “Nowadays, everything seems to cost more, and more than ever, families are having difficulty making ends meet.”

The need for food is great in the East Texas area.

According to the East Texas Food Bank, 428,000 East Texans are at risk of hunger. The Scouts help supply some of the food that local food banks deliver to families in need in our own communities.

This year’s Scouting for Food drive will begin on Saturday, Nov. 10 when thousands of Scouts will fan out across East Texas to distribute collection bags to the majority of households. Scouts will return the following Saturday, Nov. 17, to collect filled bags and bring them to one of many centrally located collection points.

Residents who would like to participate in Scouting for Food also may call the East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, at 903-240-2144 for the location of a collection point near them.

The East Texas Area Council, Boy Scouts of America, serves over 14,000 young boys and girls with the help of over 3,000 trained volunteers in the following counties: Anderson, Angelina, Cherokee, Gregg, Harrison, Houston, Marion, Nacogdoches, Panola, Rusk, San Augustine, Shelby, Smith, Sabine, Trinity, Upshur and Wood.
