Texas artist Robert Earl Keen to perform in Crockett

Palestine Herald-Press

CROCKETT — Known for his hits such as “Corpus Christie Bay,” Gringo Honeymoon,” “Merry Christmas From the Family” and his signature anthem about two lovers who get on the wrong side of the law, “The Road Goes On Forever,” Texas-born singer and songwriter Robert Earl Keen will perform during a special-event concert in Crockett.

The Piney Woods Fine Arts Association will present Keen during a concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 30 at the Crockett Civic Center as part of its upcoming 2013-2014 season.

With a career spanning 30 years, Keen is a legend of the Americana genre.

Keen began his career in the Houston club scene and honed his writing skills at Texas A&M where he received a degree in English. While at Texas A&M he met and collaborated with fellow student, Lyle Lovett and formed a friendship that lasts until today. Their hit “The Front Porch Song” captures the spirit of those carefree, college-days strumming on the front porch of a rent house in College Station.

After graduation, Keen toured regionally and began to make a name for himself. He won the Kerrville Folk Festival’s prestigious New Folk songwriting competition in 1983 and has been inducted into the Texas Heritage Songwriters Hall of Fame along with the late Van Zandt and his old college buddy, Lyle Lovett.

With over a dozen albums to his name, Keen is a master songwriter and storyteller that has amassed quite the following. From his second album West Textures with the hit “The Road Goes on Forever” to the more recent album Ready for Confetti, Keen is a pure entertainer at heart. He was named “Best Live Act of 2013” by Lone Star Hall of Fame.

Tickets start at $32 and are available online at or by calling the Piney Woods Fine Arts Association office at 936-544-4276. The office is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This show is sponsored by The Treehouse Academy and presented by PWFAA in association with KIVY/KMVL, Houston County Courier, Messenger and County Life magazine.
