Tyler man arrested after brief Labor Day chase; remains jailed on $280K bond

PALESTINE — A Tyler man remained in the Anderson County Jail Tuesday on almost $300,000 in bonds after his Labor Day arrest for numerous charges, including possession of over 33 grams of illegal mushrooms.

According to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, the arrest occurred during a routine traffic stop by Deputy Ronnie Howell at the corner of Bridges and Parker streets in downtown Elkhart.

“Howell pulled over the vehicle, which had four occupants, at about 7:15 p.m. Monday,” Taylor said. “Smelling marijuana coming out of the vehicle, he began questioning the occupants. Back-up had shown up at some point to help him.”

One of the subjects, 21-year-old Gabriel Enoc Leal of Tyler, was seated in the front passenger seat, and when the deputy had him get out of the car to be questioned, he ran.

“He was caught in the backyard of a nearby residence,” Taylor reported. “He struggled with officers and resisted. They had to use the taser on him.”

A background check on Leal revealed a long list of charges in other counties including a robbery warrant out of Hildalgo County (no bond) and a debit card/credit card abuse charge out of Smith County, with a bond of $20,000.

Leal’s charges in Anderson County include: Failure to identify a fugitive, $10,000 bond; evading arrest, $10,000 bond; resisting arrest, $10,000 bond; criminal mischief (for damage to a citizens fence), $10,000 bond; possession of drug paraphernalia, $20,000 bond; and possession of a controlled substance-PG2 4-400 grams (for the illegal mushrooms), $200,000 bond.

“The possession charge is a class 2 felony,” the sheriff said. “The deputy was just making a routine stop and it turned into a big arrest.”

The other three occupants in the vehicle were released at the scene as they were not found to be in violation of any laws, the sheriff reported.
