Woman indicted for assault on jailer

PALESTINE — A 25-year-old Palestine woman who allegedly assaulted a female jailer earlier this year has been indicted by an Anderson County grand jury.

Vanessa Nicole Melson, 25, of Palestine was indicted on March 10 on the felony charge of assault on a public servant, according to information recently released by the Anderson County district clerk’s office.

Melson was charged with the offense on Jan. 29 after she began swinging and hitting a female jailer at the Anderson County Jail who was attempting to place her in a “detox tank,” according to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor.

Melson had been transported to the jail on a public intoxication charge by a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper, according to the sheriff.

“During the book-in process, one of my female jailers was trying to put her in a detox tank,” Taylor said at the time of Melson’s arrest. “She was refusing to go in there...She jerked away and started swinging. She hit my jailer several times in the face and neck with her fists.”

The jailer sustained “redness” and “scratches on her face and neck,” but was not transported to a medical facility, according to Taylor.
