Tennessee Colony woman wins minivan in Katie Couric sweepstakes

TENNESSEE COLONY —

May Reeves' affinity for entering sweepstakes paid off in a big way recently as she was named the winner of a minivan once owned by popular ABC television show host Katie Couric.

Reeves, of Tennessee Colony, entered the “Win Katie's Tricked-Out Minivan” sweepstakes in September of 2013 and was notified that she was a finalist in December.

“I didn't hear from them again until March,” Reeves said. “They kept calling me and telling me they were going to visit the finalists and Katie would be choosing the winner.”

Reeves officially received the van on March 19, following that much-anticipated interview with the television crew.

“After the interview, they had me and my husband sit outside on the porch,” she said. “Then they pulled up in the minivan.

“I was shocked, floored. I was speechless,” she said. “I didn't know what to do.”

The vehicle, a black 2005 Chrysler Town & Country limited edition, is fully loaded, including features like remote opening side and rear doors, floor storage, a DVD player and CD changer, heated seats, 20-inch rims and more.

“It was Katie's personal vehicle — her name is on the title,” Reeves said. “It has less than 50,000 miles on it.”

In addition to the vehicle itself, Couric is covering the tax and title costs on the minivan, which was shipped from New York to Corsicana before arriving at their residence.

“I am still shocked about the whole thing,” Reeves said. “I will be until I see my license plates.”

Reeves, who suffers from debilitating neck and back pain, has had several surgeries to help alleviate the issue. She spends most of her time at home, and getting in and out of the family SUV is very painful for her, she said.

“For me, this van means freedom,” she said last week. “It has taken a huge load off of me. I am able to get in and out the the van easily.
