With the holidays approaching, the board and staff of BARC, The Humane Society are asking residents to consider the addition of new family member to their homes this Christmas and reducing adoption rates for pets this month as follows:
• Dog/Puppy Adoptions – $70, includes first set of vaccinations (excluding rabies), prepaid microchip, on site prepaid spay/neuter.
• Cat/Kitten Adoptions – $60, includes first set of vaccinations (excluding rabies), prepaid microchip, on site prepaid spay/neuter.
Those who can’t adopt have the option of sponsoring the adoption of a pet, which could cut costs in half.

Local celebrating retirement
A retirement celebration for Palestine resident and long-time employee of Atmos Energy Tom Hambry will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 14 at the Atmos Energy office, located at 6464 Texas 19 S. in Athens.
Hambry has worked 47 1/2 years with the natural gas company, beginning the job in March 1965 at the age of 21 — just one month after marrying his wife, Abbie.
His career with the company was put on hold in December of that year, when he was drafted as an Army 4th Infantry squad leader. He served in Vietnam for one year and was awarded eight medals including the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.
Hambry returned to the gas company, then known as Lone Star Gas, in 1967 and worked his way up to his current role as a Senior Service Technician.
Tom and Abbie Hambry have three sons — Ed, Larry and Matt, and three grandchildren. During the boys’ early years, Tom coached Little League Baseball.
He is a lifetime member of the Elkhart Lions Club.
A 96th birthday party for Anderson County resident Clara Higginbotham will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. Saturday at 1530 E. U.S. 84 in Palestine. Friends and relatives are welcome to come by and visit.
She was born on Dec. 10, 1915. The party is being hosted by family members.
Happy Birthday, Clara!
