Suspect arrested in hit-and-run incident

PALESTINE — Palestine Police Department officers have arrested a suspect in a hit-and-run incident that injured a male subject in west Palestine on Monday night.

According to reports, PPD officers responded to the 1100 block of West Palestine Avenue at about 11 p.m. Monday in reference to an intoxicated person who was lying in the roadway.

“Upon arrival at the scene, officers located the subject, a male, and determined that the man was severely injured and had been hit by a vehicle,” PPD Sgt. James Muniz said.

During the initial stages of the investigation, police received an anonymous tip and with help from the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office, located suspect David Orihuela, 20, at his residence outside the city limits. Police also located Orihuela’s Toyota vehicle.

After some additional investigation, Orihuela was arrested for the charge of accident involving personal injury or death and was being held in the Anderson County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Failing to comply with section 550.021 of the Texas Transportation Code carries a punishment of up to five years if a person (victim) is injured. It is a third degree felony if the victim dies as a result of the accident and the actor does not comply with the above mentioned section.

Orihuela could also face additional charges.

The name of the victim is not being released at this time, Muniz said, and the investigation — including whether or not alcohol may have been a factor — is still ongoing.
