Three jailed after arrest for role in East Texas burglary-theft ring

PALESTINE —

A joint effort of investigators in the Anderson County and Henderson County Sheriff Offices led to the arrest of three suspects involved in an East Texas burglary and theft ring on Thursday.

The suspects — John Bevel, 25, Darryl Hodge, 38 and Michelle Vaughn, 31, all from the Malakoff area in Henderson County — remain in the Athens jail on the charge of engaging in organized criminal activity, with bonds set at $75,000 each.

According to Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor, ACSO deputies responded to a burglary call on March 13 on Anderson County Road 4631, during which over $34,287 worth of items were stolen including a 4-wheeler, a flat-bed trailer, a household stove, air compressors and various power tools.

ACSO Investigator Ryan Tolliver, who has worked the case from the beginning, developed a list of suspects with cooperation from Henderson County Sheriff Office investigators.

“The three suspects were taken into custody Thursday in Henderson County,” Taylor reported. “We believe they are part of a large East Texas theft and burglary ring, and we are continuing to develop them as suspects in numerous cases in Anderson and Henderson counties.”

A small amount of the stolen property has been recovered, and authorities are continuing to recover more, the sheriff said.

“We are proud of the good work done by investigator Tolliver and the Henderson County investigators,” Taylor said. “These suspects have done quite a few burglaries in both counties and we are glad to have them off the streets.”
