Free tax help available in Palestine

Starting in February, free income tax return assistance will be available in Palestine, as well as in Grapeland, Crockett and Jacksonville.

AARP Tax-Aide counselors will provide free income tax preparation help for low to moderate income taxpayers. Last year, Tax-Aide volunteers helped hundreds of local taxpayers file their federal tax returns.

In Palestine, Tax-Aide help will be available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Wednesday and Friday throughout the tax season from Feb. 5 to April 11 at the Palestine Senior Activity Center, located at 200 N. Church St.

Taxpayers of all ages are welcome. Those 60 or older are given special consideration. You do not have to be a member of AARP or a retiree to get this help. Any low to moderate income taxpayer can get Tax-Aide help.

Those wanting help with their 2013 tax return should bring their W-2s, 1099s, other pertinent documents, photo identification and Social Security cards for each person on their return. Also, be sure to bring a copy of your tax return from last year.

“Not having these documents can cause you to pay too much tax and delay processing your return,” an AARP Tax-Aide news release said.

Tax-Aide help is available as well in Jacksonville, Crockett and Grapeland on certain days:

• Jacksonville — Monday, March 3 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Jacksonville Public Library. One time only.

• Crockett — Mondays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Crockett Library, 709 E. Houston St. in Crockett on Feb. 10, March 10 and April 7.

• Grapeland — Mondays from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the Grapeland Library, 212 N. Oak St. in Grapeland (new location) on Feb. 17, March 24 and April 11.

AARP Tax-Aide is administered through the AARP Foundation in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service. The AARP Foundation is an affiliated 501 (c)(3) nonpartisan charitable organization. The AARP Foundation administers publicly and privately funded programs such as AARP Tax-Aide and the AARP Senior Community Service Employment Program. The Foundation also carries out national litigation through AARP Foundation Litigation, and the Washington, D.C. Based advocacy programs funded through Legal Counsel for the elderly. These programs also receive support from AARP.

Trained in cooperation with the Internal Revenue Service, Tax-Aide counselors help taxpayers at many locations across the country. To find a Tax-Aide site in other areas, call 1-888-227-7669 (toll-free) or visit the Tax-Aide website
