Southside Baptist hosting free Thanksgiving dinner Sunday

Southside Baptist Church will hold its annual free Thanksgiving dinner for the community on Sunday.

The event will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. in the church activity building.

“Southside’s annual Thanksgiving dinner gives us the opportunity to serve our community — to do something that is outside of ourselves. When we engage in ministry to the community we are fulfilling our vision of loving God and loving our neighbors,” said Dr. Woody Wilson, Southside’s senior pastor.

Church volunteers will begin prepping for the dinner on Saturday.

“We are going to serve the traditional turkey and dressing meal with homemade desserts made by our members,” said Carolyn Dickinson, event coordinator and chairman of the church’s Family Life Committee. “We want to remind the community to be faithful to their blessings this year.”

Dickinson expects about 50 to 100 church members to help with the dinner — from helping with parking, kitchen set up and clean up, cooking, greeting, etc. Ladies from the church are providing the desserts.

“It takes a lot of volunteers to do this,” Dickinson said. “We are joining with South Union Missionary Baptist Church this year — that is a new addition for us. They are helping with the preparation and serving.”

Last year, about 350 members of the community attended the Thanksgiving dinner.

The church has been passing out and putting up flyers and brochures around town in both English and Spanish. Southside also gave out information about the dinner to families who attended the church’s annual Fall Fest event on Halloween.

“Everyone is welcome to come,” Dickinson said.

Southside Baptist is located at 1500 Crockett Rd.
