Palestine Public Library to honor patrons today

PALESTINE — The Palestine Public Library is wrapping up its weeklong celebration of National Library Week today by honoring its first 200 adult patrons with carnations and goodie bags to the little ones who visit the library.

The Palestine Public Library serves Anderson County by providing books, DVD, audiobooks, downloadable audiobooks and e-books through its digital branch.

The youth department provides storytime, school tours, and Summer Reading Club and the adult services department provides reader's advisory, computer classes and other programs throughout the year.

The Palestine Public Library is located in the Palestine Mall at 2000 S. Loop 256. For more information, call 903-729-4121 or visit online at Library hours are noon to 8 p.m. Monday and Thursday, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

First sponsored in 1958, National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and libraries across the country each April. This year’s celebration was designated as April 14-20.

90th birthday celebration set

A 90th birthday celebration for longtime deacon and hospital chaplain Alex Kobar will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Sacred Heart Catholic Church Activity Building, located at 503 N. Queen St.

Kobar has been a deacon at Sacred Heart Catholic Church for 29 years. He also serves his community as a chaplain at Palestine Regional Medical Center and has been a member of the Palestine Kiwanis Club for 66 years.

He and his wife of 66 years, Johnye, have one son, one daughter, two grandsons and three great-grandchildren. The couple will celebrate the 67th anniversary in May.

Friends are invited to stop by the birthday reception for Alex. No gifts please, just birthday cards.

Muse Cemetery Homecoming

The Muse Cemetery homecoming event will be held at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, May 5, with a business meeting, worship service and potluck lunch.
