PALESTINE — And the countdown begins — only 117 shopping days left ‘til Christmas!

Palestine officials unveiled this year’s holiday season theme Monday morning, as the last official event during the Chamber of Commerce’s 12 Days of Christmas in July extravaganza. The theme for the 2013 Christmas season is “Where traditions are made.”

“We’re very excited,” Chamber Marketing Manager Breezy Lake-Wolfe said Monday morning. “It’s the perfect opportunity to get the word out now and generate buzz for the holiday season.”

Tentative holiday schedules in and around Palestine include the Polar Express train ride at the Texas State Railroad, Nov. 15-Dec. 31; Santa’s Magical workshop, Nov. 22-Dec. 22; Christmas parade of lights, Dec. 7; Breakfast with Santa, Dec. 7; and Frost Fest: A Vintage Holiday in the Piney Woods, Dec. 6-8.

“Traditions are extremely important to most of us, especially during the holidays,” Palestine interim City Manager and Economic Development Director Wendy Ellis said. “And Palestine is definitely a place where traditions are made.

“We’re celebrating all our old traditions, as well as starting some new ones this year, thanks to the support and participation of both the city and the county.”

Ellis said new traditions to continue include changing the annual Christmas parade’s route to both begin and end on the courthouse square in downtown Palestine and the county’s Lighting of the Square.

Lake-Wolfe said she thought the Christmas in July event was a resounding success as well.

“Everyone had a lot of fun,” she said. “And thank you to all our businesses and others who participated.”
