Blood drive set Friday at Kroger

PALESTINE — Giving blood frequently can save lives and benefit donors’ personal health.

This Friday, donors who participate in the Kroger Food Store blood drive will receive an extra benefit — a $10 Kroger gift card.

The blood drive will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at 325 E. Spring St. in the parking lot on the Carter BloodCare bus.

Each time an individual donates blood to Carter BloodCare, the phlebotomist checks the donor’s blood pressure, pulse, current temperature and hemoglobin level -– an indicator of the donor’s iron level.

“Tracking your health information can help you and your doctor monitor your overall wellness, and it is just one of the ways that giving blood often benefits you and your community,” a Carter BloodCare news release said.

Additionally, Carter BloodCare provides donors with a free total cholesterol reading. Donors can review the information online within days of their donation by going to carterbloodcare.org and clicking on “my page.”

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent, and 17-year-olds can give independently. There is no upper age limit for giving. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID each time they donate. It’s also a good idea to eat a nutritious meal and drink plenty of water before giving blood.

During the month of February every blood donor will receive a free Dallas Stars hockey puck and a buy-one-get-one-free ticket to see the Dallas Stars play. Plus all donors will be entered to win other Dallas Stars experiences including luxury suite tickets complete with complimentary food and beverages. For details, go to gofightgive.org.
