The Westwood Independent School District Board of Trustees is scheduled to set a date for a public hearing regarding the approval of the 2014-15 budget during Monday's monthly meeting.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the Westwood High School Theater Arts Building, located at 1820 Panther Blvd.
After setting the date, the board will approve publication of notice for the public hearing regarding the budget and proposed tax-rate, as required by law. The proposed tax rate will be $1.17 as approved at the rollback election. The proposed budget also will be approved for posting on the district's website.
At the June school board meeting budget workshop, WISD Director of Finance Tricia Wardell gave a presentation on fund balance reports, projected revenue and preliminary budget estimates for the 2014-15 school year. The preliminary 2014-15 budget includes a proposed raise of $500 to the above base amount for teachers (which would put WISD at about $4,000 above base pay for teachers); a modest adjustment to the hourly staff pay scales; a 3 percent increase for employees not currently on set pay scales; and adding 11 teaching positions and three special education paraprofessionals based on anticipated growth. Some of these positions will remain vacant until enrollment is at a certain level. The increase to payroll costs would be $1,300,000.
Total proposed expenditures for the 2014-15 budget are $14,107,900. The difference in revenue versus expenditures is $982,900 in the general fund and $126,100 in food services. This leads to a deficit $1,109,000 budget.
Also during the meeting, the board will consider hiring contract personnel and acknowledging resignations. Specifically, they will consider ratifying teacher contracts and the Westwood Elementary School Principal contract, as well as considering hiring, accepting resignations and leave requests for professional and non-professional personnel.
In other action, items on the agenda include:
• CONSIDER approval of the consent agenda which includes; minutes of the June 9 board meeting; quarterly investment report; June Tax Collection Report; fund-raisers; Region 7 Purchasing Cooperative; Staff Development Waiver for 2014-15; and School Success Waiver for fall remediation.
