PALESTINE —

Palestine Realtor Joseph Thompson was confirmed the new Palestine City Councilman for District 4 Wednesday after the Early Voting Ballot Board met to count the provisional votes to make sure a run-off election wasn't needed, according to information provided by the city.

Saturday's special election was held in conjunction with the general election for the unexpired term in District 4, held by the late James H. Yelverton, who passed away Feb. 17. The term will expire in May 2015.

Thompson led Saturday's race with 43 votes (52 percent), with opponents Kenneth Davidson receiving 24 votes and Harvey Joe Baxter receiving 15.

Four out of five provisional ballots were counted as valid with the total votes ending up Wednesday with Thompson, 47 (57 percent); Davidson, 24; and Baxter, 15.

“I plan to bring energy and enthusiasm to the council as I do in other things I'm involved in. I'm excited about the position and the opportunity to represent the City of Palestine and the constituents of District 4,” Thompson told the Herald-Press Wednesday.

Davidson thanked the residents of District 4 for voting for him.

“I congratulate Mr. Thompson,” Davidson said. “I will be back to run for election again in May 2015. I will be keeping an eye on things until then.”

Also during the city election, Adam Harding won the vote for Palestine City Council District 1, leading with 68 percent of the vote against opponent Ricky Minton.

Harding will serve the city for a two-year term through May 2016.
