An 11-year-old boy was struck by a vehicle Friday around 8:15 p.m. at Sycamore Lane Apartments, located at 321 Old Elkhart Rd. in Palestine.
According to Palestine Police Lt. Jeffrey Powell, the driver of a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe was distracted and did not see the boy.
“The driver was crossing over a speed bump by Building B,” Powell said, “so they were inside the parking lot, when (the driver) began to coast down the driveway. Basically, she was distracted in the vehicle and heard a thud, and she stopped and saw a child roll out from underneath the vehicle.”
Powell told the Herald-Press the driver of the vehicle admitted she was looking down in her vehicle when the accident occurred. Officers performed an in-house accident report, and the child was transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center by ambulance “for what was labeled in the accident report as incapacitating injuries,” he added.
According to the Texas Department of Transportation, incapacitating injuries can include “any injury, other than a fatal injury, which prevents the injured person from walking, driving or normally continuing the activities he was capable of performing before the injury occurred.”
As of Monday afternoon, the status of the boy was not known by the department, Powell said.
No arrests were made.
