Palestine named one of top travel spots

Palestine recently landed a spot in the Texas Highways magazine's “2014 Top 40 Travel Destinations” list, ranking No. 14.

Last fall, Texas Highways called on readers and fans to share their favorite places in the state of Texas.  Thousands of readers helped to shape the final Top 40 list, a countdown of the chosen destinations has been revealed throughout 2014. To date, Texas Highways has announced the top 13 to 40 travel destinations in Texas.

“We are beyond thrilled to be on the list coming in at No.14,” City of Palestine Marketing Manager Breezy Lake-Wolfe said. “Our community outranked large 'hot spots' such as Dallas and Austin.  This should tell you something. People are visiting Palestine, and the secret is finally being told about our wonderful destination. Our local residents are also our biggest champions. When we have social media campaigns or events, they help spread the word by sharing their experiences in Palestine.”

In this month’s issue of the magazine, you can find No. 15-13. Galveston and Corpus Christi ranked No.15 and No. 13, respectively.  According to Texas Highways, “readers enthused about Palestine’s B&Bs, antique shops, wineries and growing restaurant scene.”

“It is a huge honor to be named No. 14 on the list,” said Alex Patel, Palestine Tourism Advisory Board member and owner of the Hampton Inn & Suites. “It puts Palestine on the map and drives more tourism into our community. We are a hidden gem, and we want all of our future tourists to know we welcome them to our amazing community. I can’t wait to see who ranks No. 1. Hopefully, we get a few more East Texas towns in the next 12 spots.”

Lake-Wolfe said tourism is very important to the East Texas region.

“It increases the tax base and helps the local economy as a whole,” Lake-Wolfe said. “I believe this is just the beginning of more great things to come for our community.”
