Everyone’s favorite upside-down fairytale is coming to the historic Texas Theater this summer.
The Palestine Community Theatre will present the Broadway smash hit, “Shrek The Musical,” a song-and dance-filled stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning DreamWorks animated film.
“Shrek The Musical” will open Thursday, July 24 and will run for two long weekends.
Director Chaundra Dantin, who also plays the role of Fiona, has recreated the fantasy Kingdom of Far Far Away in downtown Palestine, with many hilarious twists.
Instead of a knight in shining armor riding a noble steed, the hero is a swamp-dwelling ogre by the name of Shrek, played by Doug Smith, who has teamed up with a chatterbox donkey, played by Larry Weber. The unlikely duo is on a mission from Lord Farquaad, played by James Hampton, to save Princess Fiona from the dragon-guarded tower. In the end Shrek and Donkey must rescue Fiona from marrying Farquaad, so that she can be with her true love, Shrek.
Other fairytale misfits add surprises such as Pinocchio, Gingy, the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, the Wicked Witch, Peter Pan, the Pied Piper, and many more characters you will recognize.
“PCT has been preparing for this show since last year. This entertaining, family-friendly show features a terrific score, spectacular costumes, dance numbers and comedy,” Texas Theater Marketing Director Dana Goolsby said. “We’ve been getting calls for several weeks from all over the state about tickets. Therefore, we want to encourage everyone who wants to see the show to purchase their tickets in advance.”
Performance dates for “Shrek The Musical” are July 24, 25, 26, 27, 31, Aug. 1, 2 and 3.
Shows on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays will be at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday matinees will be at 2 p.m.
PCT will host its regular, complimentary wine and cheese gala on opening night, Thursday, July 24.
