A 21-year-old Palestine man remained in the Anderson County Jail Wednesday following his arrest a day prior for sexual assault of a 15-year-old girl.
According to Sheriff Greg Taylor, Damien Rashard Purvis was arrested without incident Tuesday night in Palestine after a warrant was obtained for his arrest.
“We got an outcry on Jan. 22, which is when we began investigating the sexual assault of a child victim,” Taylor said. “The victim was diagnosed with an STD — that's how the family found out and made the outcry.”
The incident occurred on Jan. 4, the sheriff said, also stating that he did not wish to reveal the relationship of the victim and suspect, only that “they knew each other.”
Purvis remained jailed on a $100,000 bond for the charge of aggravated sexual assault of a child. ACSO Sgt. Investigator Ronnie Foster is in charge of the ongoing investigation.
“We are concerned that there might be other underage victims and we hope that they see this and come forward,” Taylor said. “Any adults who have been involved with the suspect may want to undergo an STD screening.”
Those who have any information about the case or who may have been a victim are urged to contact the ACSO at 903-729-6068.
