A Palestine man remained in the Anderson County jail on Wednesday, following his Tuesday arrest for the reported abuse of an 11-month-old infant.
According to Sheriff Greg Taylor, the incident was reported on Jan. 13 as having occurred on Jan. 12, at a residence in the 4000 block of U.S. 84.
“The report was that an 11-month-old child has received injury to the face and had been bitten on the arm,” Taylor said. “We began the investigation and started interviewed suspects.”
Charles Anthony Matthews, 26, of Palestine, the boyfriend of the child's mother, confessed to the abuse during on interview on Feb. 4. He has been charged with injury to a child-causing bodily injury, a third-degree felony, with a bond set at $750,000.
“The investigation continues, and there are possibly other victims out there,” Taylor said. “We are continuing to work the evidence.”
As per protocol, Child Protective Services did get involved in the case, the sheriff reported, and the child is currently with the mother.
ACSO investigator Sgt. Ronnie Foster is overseeing the case. Anyone with more information regarding this case may contact him at 903-729-6068.
