PALESTINE —

Classic car enthusiasts won't want to miss the 29th annual Cars of Palestine Car Show set during the Texas Dogwood Trails Festival in March.

This year's event will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, March 22 in the downtown area on Spring Street behind First Presbyterian Church, within walking distance to the festival activities.

“We hope the weather will be perfect and hope for a good turnout,” said Cars of Palestine Board of Directors member Jimmy Alford. “We usually have 150 to 200 cars in the show.”

Approximately 48 awards will be presented for the cars in various classes. Some of the awards include: Best of Show, Mayor's Choice Award, Chief of Police Choice Award, Sheriff's Choice Award, People's Choice Award, Best Standard Paint Award and Best Custom Paint Award, as well as two awards in every class.

“It's a great day to bring the kids out and to look at the cars and engines. We have everything from Model T's to classic cars and mustangs,” Alford said.

In fact, a Dallas mustang club will be bringing at least 50 cars to participate in the show and in the Dogwood Trails Festival Parade.

“They come for the parade and Dogwood Trails,” Alford said.

Proceeds from the show go toward the Cars of Palestine scholarship fund.

“This is our one fund-raiser we do every year to give scholarships to local youths and the other charities that we give to,” Alford said. “Cash prizes will be awarded this year.”

Local Boy Scouts will sell hot dogs and other refreshments. Door prizes will be given away throughout the day. A deejay will provide music. Games and a 50/50 drawing also are planned.

The fun for car enthusiasts doesn't end when the car show is over — another event is planned at the Courthouse Square. A Doo Wop Cruise is planned from 6 to 10 p.m. on March 22 during the evening.

“Come gather at the square and show off your antique car or hot rod! Listen and dance to the hits of the '50s and '60s with music provided by Jammin JS Productions,” a news release said.
