PALESTINE — Palestine police are investigating an accident involving a semi-truck and an SUV that occurred at 2:30 p.m. Friday on Loop 256 near Texas 155 north.

From the initial investigation, officers believe that the SUV was traveling west to enter onto the loop and attempted to make a U-turn after entering onto Loop 256.

“The SUV made a U-turn in an attempt to travel east on the loop and turned directly into the path of the semi, which was also traveling west on Loop 256,” Palestine Police Department Lt. James Muniz reported. “The semi truck moved to the left in an attempt to prevent a collision, but was unable to stop and hit the SUV in the driver’s side.”

The SUV was pushed across the loop and into oncoming traffic before coming to a stop in the eastbound lanes of traffic. No other vehicles were involved in the incident.

The driver of the SUV was identified as Verne Walker, 80, of Palestine, who was traveling with his 75-year-old wife. The couple was transported to Palestine Regional Medical Center for treatment and was reported to be in stable condition.

The driver of the semi was identified as 54-year-old Scott Hodges of Gilmer. Hodges was not injured during the wreck and was not cited for any violation.

The accident is still under investigation at this time. Officer Justin Carlson is the investigating officer for the Palestine PD.
