Sheriff: No foul play suspected in bridge body case

PALESTINE — Law enforcement officials report no signs of foul play in the case of a deceased male discovered underneath a bridge Tuesday on U.S. 79, and are still waiting for autopsy results to determine the man’s identity and official cause of death.

“We have no identification on the man yet,” Anderson County Sheriff Greg Taylor said Wednesday. “Because of the state of the body, we will need to confirm his ID with DNA and fingerprints.

“We do not believe that foul play is a factor at this time.”

Texas Department of Transportation mowing crews found the body at about noon under the Neches River bridge at the Anderson-Cherokee county line.

Investigators said the body looked like it may have been under the bridge for “a few days.”

Anderson County Justice of the Peace James Todd told a local television affiliate that the mowers spotted the body “before hitting it with the mower.”

The Department of Public Safety and Texas Rangers are assisting in the investigation.

Anyone with any information concerning the man’s identify can call the ACSO at 903-729-6068.
