City holding chili cook-off to benefit local family

PALESTINE — The City of Palestine is hosting the fourth annual Chili Cook-off Holiday Benefit on Friday to raise money for a local family in need this holiday season.

“This is an opportunity for the City of Palestine to give to its community in a different way,” Palestine Economic Development Corp. Director Wendy Ellis said. “There are many events we do that help the city and its citizens, but this gives the city a chance to give to our community through other means rather than the services that we already provide. It’s a wonderful experience that we look forward to every year as a staff.”

The chili cook-off will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Palestine Civic Center, 1819 Spring St.

Last year the City of Palestine raised more than $1,000 to give to a needy family with seven children to help put presents under the Christmas tree. Walmart also helped by donating bicycles to the children.

“We go through the independent school districts in our area to find the families that need our help,” said Paula Ellis, cook-off coordinator for the city. “Every year we hope to raise more and more money so we can help more families. The need is always there and we want to encourage our citizens to help each other, and eat good chili.”

More than 10 teams will participate, but there is still room for more competitors. There is no fee to enter the competition.

Anderson County Judge Robert Johnson, Good to Go Taco owner Gina Johnson of Dallas and a surprise guest will serve as judges. The winner will receive dinner for two and bragging rights for having the best chili in town.

The cook-off is open to the public.

Admission for the cook-off is $5 per person and comes with a drawing ticket for prizes. Additional drawing tickets can be purchased for $5.

Prizes were donated by the following businesses: Bishop’s Brisket House, Mail & More, Red Hat Rentals, Cream & Coffee, Bratz Tires, Dairy Queen, Pro-cuts, Mazzio’s, Maurice’s, USA Nails, Island Tans, Jamie’s Therapeutic Touch Day Spa, Tractor Supply Company, Fastenal, Snap Fitness, Neel Jewelers, Bealls, Pet Sense, Aaahhsome Salon and Day Spa, Little Ceasars, Cotton Patch, Pizza Hut, Charles E.
